Looking for an opportunity to develop new job skills and to play an important role in your town government? Please consider becoming a Lister.
Listers are elected municipal officials and serve as a board of Listers. The job of the Board of Listers is to produce, sign and defend the Grand List, which is the list of all properties in town and their market value. This task involves collection of data on new and improved properties, administration of statutorily defined exemptions and other rules regarding assessment of various categories of properties. The job involves interaction with taxpayers and members of the public as well as other local municipal officials and officials with the state of Vermont.
The state of Vermont now requires certification as a Vermont Property Assessor level I to be attained within the first year after being elected. Link to this program: https://tax.vermont.gov/sites/tax/files/documents/BR-1349.pdf
While the ideal candidate for Lister would already have experience in the assessment field, it is an elected position and thus the training can be obtained while serving as a Lister. Other desirable job skills would be computer skills, solid math skills, data management and filing skills, knowledge of deed reading, real estate experience, construction knowledge, among other job experience that may be transferrable.
Lister hours are Tuesdays 10am to 2 pm
There are two open races in the March 3, 2026 election:
- Lister 2-year term to finish a 3-year term
- Lister 3-year term
These are elected positions and require a completed Candidate Consent form and a petition of 17 registered West Rutland voters. These forms can be found in the links below or by emailing the Town Clerk at djasmin@westrutlandvt.org
These need to be returned to the Town Clerk by Monday January 26th.
